Frequently Asked Questions
The Rent Tax Credit is a tax credit available to tenants who pay rent for private accommodation in Ireland. It was introduced for 2022 and has been extended and increased. For 2025, the maximum credit is €1,000 for a single person and €2,000 for a married couple, equivalent to 20% of rent paid up to €5,000 (single) or €10,000 (married).
You are eligible if you pay rent for your principal private residence (PPR) in Ireland, and the property is not rent-a-room or student accommodation rented directly from an educational institution. The landlord must not be a parent or close relative, and the property must be your main home.
You claim through Revenue's myAccount portal. Log in, go to "Manage your tax 2025", and add the Rent Tax Credit. You will need details of your landlord and the amount of rent paid. The credit can also be claimed in real-time through the Rent Credit Claim page.
No. The old Rent Relief scheme was abolished in 2011 for new claimants. The current Rent Tax Credit is a separate, newer scheme introduced from 2022. If you were claiming rent relief under the old scheme, you cannot claim the new credit in addition.
There is a separate Rent Tax Credit for students, which covers accommodation rented from private landlords (not from the college/university directly). Student accommodation rented directly from the institution does not qualify.
Yes. The Rent Tax Credit was available from 2022. You can claim for 2022, 2023, and 2024 by submitting Form 12 or through myAccount. Claims must be submitted within four years.
