1 Before You Hire

  • Complete TR1/TR2 if not already registered, and add employer PAYE registration.

  • Affects entitlements, tax treatment and employer obligations.

  • Include employer PRSI (11.15%) on top of gross salary.

  • BrightPay, Thesaurus, Sage Micropay are popular Irish options.

2 Before Start Date

  • Legally required under Terms of Employment (Information) Acts.

  • Required for payroll registration.

  • Revenue will send a Tax Credit Certificate to you directly.

  • New employees must be added before their first pay date.

3 Day One & First Pay Run

  • If no Tax Credit Certificate received yet, use emergency tax rates temporarily.

  • Required under PAYE Modernisation.

  • Must show gross pay, all deductions and net pay.

4 Monthly Obligations

  • This is the employer's obligation — failure attracts interest and penalties.

  • Must be retained for 6 years.

5 Employment Law Compliance

  • Available from the WRC at workplacerelations.ie

  • From 2024: 5 days statutory sick pay per year at 70% of normal pay.
