Statutory redundancy is 100% tax-free. Your employer may offer an enhanced voluntary package above this statutory minimum.
Statutory minimum only. This calculator shows your legal entitlement under the Redundancy Payments Acts. Your employer may offer a higher voluntary redundancy payment. Tax rules on voluntary payments above the statutory amount can be complex — seek advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Statutory redundancy is calculated as two weeks' pay per year of service, plus one additional week. Weekly pay is capped at €600. For example: 5 years of service with a weekly pay of €700 would give (5 × 2 + 1) × €600 = €6,600. Note: this calculator uses 1.5 weeks per year as the standard formula.
Statutory redundancy is tax-free. However, any ex-gratia (voluntary) redundancy payments above the statutory amount may be subject to income tax over certain exemption thresholds. The basic exemption is €10,160, plus €765 for each complete year of service, potentially increasing to €20,160 with an increased exemption.
You must have at least 2 years of continuous employment (104 weeks) with the same employer to qualify for statutory redundancy. Part-time workers who work at least 8 hours per week also qualify if they meet the service requirement.
Yes. For statutory redundancy purposes, weekly pay is capped at €600, regardless of your actual earnings. This cap has been in place since 2013. Enhanced voluntary redundancy packages from employers often exceed the statutory minimum.
If your employer fails to pay statutory redundancy, you can apply to the Department of Social Protection's Redundancy Payments Scheme to receive payment. You must apply within 52 weeks of the redundancy date. You can also refer the matter to the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC).
Periods of certified sick leave, maternity leave, parental leave, and lay-off generally count towards your continuous service for redundancy purposes. Long-term absence without pay, or periods working for a different employer, do not count.
